Cultural diversity can be very beneficial to a global company. When a company first goes global, it is imperative that the company can come up with creative and innovative ideas in order to stand out among other international competitors. The best way to pool together diverse and ingenious ideas is by hiring a multilingual staff. Employees with cultural diversity will think from different angles and will also be able to market ideas which will do well overseas. This is just a beginning as to how cultural diversity can benefit a global business.
Cultural diversity can be a formula for success. Selling products to a global market can be extremely challenging. For example, many companies do not translate their marketing materials in foreign countries. In Latin America, this causes a problem because businesses advertise their discounts with the word “sale”. However, the same word “sale” in Spanish, translates to “leave”. Therefore, many customers, who do not speak English, are not attracted to large corporate sales simply because of how the word is perceived in their country. For this reason, it is imperative that multilingual employees from diverse cultural backgrounds are hired because they will be the first to recognize such terrible errors in a marketing campaign.
Likewise, certain products and campaigns will work wonderfully in some countries while in other countries the products may be a disaster. Cultural diversity implies that the staff member is able to recognize right away what will succeed and what will fail in the proposed country.
However, if your staff is not open minded, it is very likely that the implications of cultural diversity can also be a formula for disaster. Just as there are positive results of working in a culturally diversified environment, there are also negative implications to working in this type of atmosphere. By hiring a multilingual staff, the interpersonal relationships between workers may be unsteady. Cultural diversity means that you will have a staff that is composed of employees who come from a variety of different educational and social backgrounds meaning it might be difficult for employees to understand each other on a personal level.
The work ethic of each staff may also vary greatly, creating more conflicts in the work environment. A culturally diversified employee who is constantly in disagreement with other employees will never produce a meaningful and innovative product for your company. Your hiring decision may also prove to be counterproductive. Therefore, when it comes to hiring your multicultural staff, you should also be sure that these employees are able to work together efficiently and creatively. Any riff in this relationship could cause disaster for your company.
Cultural diversity is required for a successful global company. As a resource manager, one must constantly overlook the efficiency of this cultural team to make sure that their creativity is not halted by cultural differences and their negative implications.
